Casemix System Workshop Helps HPUSM Prepare for National DRG 2027

USM, KUBANG KERIAN, KELANTAN, 1 September 2026 – The Casemix System Workshop, organized by the Casemix System Evaluation Unit of the Health Campus, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), served as a preparatory platform for the staff of USM Specialist Hospital (HPUSM) ahead of the national 'Diagnosis Related Group' (DRG) implementation scheduled for January 2027.

The workshop, held on 23 and 24 August, involved 40 participants comprising top management, heads of departments, and department representatives from HPUSM, featuring knowledge-sharing sessions, discussions, and practical training related to the Casemix system.

On the first day, participants were introduced to the role of Casemix in hospital management, as well as the concepts of MY-DRG, 'Casemix Grouper', 'costing', and 'Clinical Pathway' presented by Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Syed Mohamed Aljunid. Additionally, Associate Professor Dr. Rosminah Mohamed shared insights and experiences regarding the implementation of the Casemix System at HPUSM.

Meanwhile, the second-day session focused on technical and practical aspects, including the coding process for diagnoses and procedures using ICD-11, ICD-9-CM, the MY-DRG 'Minimum Data Set' (MDS), and the MY-DRG 'Casemix Grouper', alongside coding exercises and a demonstration of the MY-DRG 'Grouper'.
 
 
Overall, the workshop provided a comprehensive understanding of the management, planning, and technical application of the Casemix system, while enhancing coordination between management and departments at HPUSM to ensure a more structured and effective national DRG implementation. 
 
 
The workshop was officially opened by the Campus Director of the USM Health Campus, Professor Dato’ Dr. Shaiful Bahari Ismail.
