USM's Bioinformatics Workshop Empowers Researchers with Genome Analysis and Protein Structure Modelling Expertise

August 2023, Health Campus, USM - In an effort to bolster scientific research and empower budding scientists and researchers, the School of Health Sciences and the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM) at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recently hosted a dynamic two-part bioinformatics workshop. This groundbreaking event, held in a hybrid format for inclusivity, aimed to provide participants with a deep dive into genome analysis and protein structure modelling.

Session A: Genome Analysis (24th and 25th July 2023)

Kicking off on July 24th, Session A of the Bioinformatics Workshop commenced with an introduction to the fundamental principles of genomics and the pivotal role genome analysis plays across various biological research fields. Participants were immersed in the world of bioinformatics, exploring tools and databases used to retrieve, process, and interpret genomic data.

Over two intensive days of learning, attendees emerged with a comprehensive understanding of genome analysis concepts and practical skills. Equipped with the ability to navigate bioinformatics tools and databases, participants left with the capability to interpret genomic data and apply their newfound knowledge to real-world research challenges.

Session B: Protein Structure Modelling (26th and 27th July 2023)

The workshop's second leg, Session B, commenced on July 26th with an exploration of protein structure prediction methods. Renowned experts delivered lectures covering primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary protein structures, emphasizing the pivotal role of protein structure modelling in understanding protein functionality and drug design. Participants were also introduced to various algorithms used for homology modelling and ab initio prediction, along with crucial insights into structure validation techniques and the assessment of predicted protein models.

Upon completing Session B, participants emerged with a profound understanding of the intricate world of protein structure modelling. They gained proficiency in using diverse software tools for structure prediction and were equipped with the expertise to critically evaluate and validate generated protein models—a skillset critical to advancing research across multiple domains, including drug discovery, enzyme engineering, and the comprehension of protein-protein interactions.

A Collaborative Triumph

This transformative bioinformatics workshop was a testament to the collaborative spirit within USM, as it featured contributions from speakers representing the School of Health Sciences, the School of Medical Sciences, and INFORMM. These diverse perspectives offered participants a comprehensive insight into genome analysis and protein structure modelling, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of these fields.

Dr. Hong Kar Wai was honoured as the workshop's quiz winner, showcasing a remarkable understanding of the workshop's materials. The organisers extend their heartfelt appreciation to all the participants, speakers, and contributors for their invaluable contributions, which made this workshop an extraordinary success. As USM looks ahead, they eagerly anticipate organising similar events in the future. These initiatives aim to foster continued growth and advancement in the field of bioinformatics, equipping researchers with the tools and knowledge necessary to drive innovation and discovery in the realm of molecular sciences.
