The National Community and Charity Programme on Mabul Island (PROKOMAKS2025) was successfully implemented from 9-14 August 2025 with the involvement of 160 participants comprising students of Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Mabul, teachers and the local community by 28 members of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). The programme organised by the USM Biomedical Programme in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UMS, aims to empower the community through education, health and sustainability, as well as strengthening academic and research networks between the two universities.
Program locations include Semporna and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah which are busy with various activities carried out including interactive learning sessions with students, health checks, exposure to the concept of recycling as well as demonstrations of product innovations such as antibacterial soap based on used oil and exposure to the concept of sustainability and climate change affecting life, especially on Mabul Island. The local community also receives zakat donations and basic necessities. The Prokomaks was formalized by the representative of Datuk Abdul Rani Alias, Commander of Bridge Sabah, PGA, namely Norman Chendan A/K Philip, Government Servant of the PGA Kunak Battalion, Sabah. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UMS, where they shared expertise and explored collaborative research projects. The program concluded with the presentation of contributions to orphans and the underprivileged at Rumah Amal Kasih, Kota Kinabalu.
The program brought about a positive impact, as students became more aware of health and sustainability issues, while the local community benefited from health checks and community assistance. For the universities, PROKOMAKS 2025 opened new avenues for strengthening academic collaboration, research, and publications, while also equipping participants with leadership and communication skills. The success of PROKOMAKS2025 proves that strategic linkages between universities, communities and local agencies are capable of producing high-impact community service programs and becoming a model for future implementation. Congratulations to the Program Director, Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Dasuki Sul’ain and fellow comrades from USM and UMS who also worked together to make this program a success.
