USM’s 3R Awareness Programme
Asnaf Community in Chuping, Perlis Benefits from USM’s 3R Awareness Programme ‘From Waste to Wealth’
CHUPING, PERLIS, 12 July 2025 – The School of Health Sciences (PPSK), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), in collaboration with Akademi Transformasi Asnaf MAIPs Sdn. Bhd. and the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) Perlis, successfully organised the From Waste to Wealth Programme at Taman Desa Asnaf, Chuping, Perlis.
The project, funded by the USM Academic Research Grant, was spearheaded by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Marwanis Anua together with co-researchers Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nor Fazila Che Mat, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sabreena Safuan, and Dr. Faridah Naim, and further supported by a dedicated committee of postgraduate and undergraduate students.
The initiative sought to enhance knowledge, awareness, and practical application of the 3R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) among 100 members of the Asnaf community, encouraging them to embrace sustainable waste management practices that promote both environmental sustainability and global health.
The programme featured a series of hands-on and engaging activities, including a 3R awareness talk and interactive quizzes. Farmers were introduced to food waste composting techniques, housewives were guided through basic soap-making using used cooking oil, while children participated in storytelling sessions and a colouring contest designed to instill environmental values from an early age.
